A paralegal assistant’s job description includes:
a variety of administrative tasks that support lawyers and legal processes:
- Document management: Filing, organizing, and maintaining legal documents and correspondence
- Scheduling: Scheduling client meetings, interviews, and trial dates
- Communication: Communicating with clients, witnesses, lawyers, and vendors
- Research: Conducting legal research, including regulations, laws, and legal articles
- Case preparation: Assisting attorneys in preparing for trials, hearings, and meetings
- Document drafting: Drafting and proofreading legal documents, such as pleadings and contracts
- Billing: Preparing invoices and maintaining billing records
- Calendar management: Monitoring and maintaining calendars of trial dates and meetings
- Contact lists: Maintaining contact lists
- Deadlines: Monitoring deadlines
Legal assistants are qualified by education, training, or work experience. Many have at least an associate degree in paralegal studies or legal assisting. Some employers prefer candidates with bachelor’s degrees in these fields.
